Building control is our nation’s authority and any work carried out that requires a structural alteration should meet current building codes and regulation requirements.

Building Control ensures that buildings are designed and constructed in accordance with the Building Regulations and associated legislation, and they police all types of construction to ensure that work is completed to the required standard, and that all changes are registered.

A building control inspection is required when:

• Trusses are removed from the attic or loft space
• Structural changes are made to the building
• Conversions that will be used for habitable purposes

A storage conversion must only be used for storage purposes.

Non-habitable or storage conversions must not appear to be habitable and must have minimal fixtures and fittings. They must be only dry lined and not plastered and must have a fold away staircase not a fixed one.

Habitable spaces must have an appropriate means of escape and a minimum head height of 2 metres is required.

Habitable loft conversions and hobby rooms can be used as another bedroom.

This is because safety measures are put in place to ensure your loft conversion is just as safe as any other room in your house.
